Tuesdays with Murphy: Celebrating my Heritage

The four leggeds spent last week celebrating their Irish heritage … so this Tuesday, it’s all about celebrating mine – and all my fellow goldens. Did you know that we Goldens come from a combination of Irish Setters, Tweed Water dogs, several other retrievers, and the now extinct (but similar to the Newfoundland) St. John’s water dog. So no wonder I have a personality to die for (and humility to boot) … I have Newfoundland genes!...

From Bud: B-r-r-r-r

Thanks to our friend Bud Vincent of Hollingside Images for this wonderful shot, and this fun accompanying story: “This is how Cape Bonavista looks and feels on a howling/stormy day/night..I just loved it..I had to stay in the vehicle and shoot through the window.. Gotta love sepia and black and white…Enjoy…B-r-r-r-r.” I might have stayed in the vehicle, too – but love the...

TBT: Winters Past

This is one of my favourite shots of The Berry and the boys, so it seems fitting for a Throwback Thursday. It’s from a hike we took way back in 2013 (my, does time fly!). Of course, we’re lucky to surrounded by some of the best hiking trails on the island: see our complete list of the best hiking trails on the Baccalieu trail here.  So we’ve had almost countless hikes since this photo was taken. And remember – there’s still a few weeks take advantage of our winter special, and some winter walks – the ‘Winter Warm-Up‘ is good through March 31....

For #WeddingWednesday … We Made The Cut!

Well consider us as pleased as punch … The Doctor’s House just made WeddingBells’ list of Canada’s Loveliest Venues 2016! Looks like the editors were as taken with the romantic story of The Doctor’s House as much as our oceanfront beauty and casually elegant wedding space. And we (humbly!) have to agree! To learn more about weddings at The Doctor’s House, please see...

Did We See You?

Here’s my daughter, Kathryn, at the recent Devotion Wedding Show. She and our Wedding Coordinator Holly report that it was a wonderful day, with a chance to meet lots of brides and fellow vendors. Thanks to Crystal and all the folks responsible for putting on such a great show for Newfoundland wedding vendors – we’re already looking forward to the next! And to learn more about weddings at The Doctor’s House, please see...

The Doctor’s House Wins CBDC Tourism Business of the Year Award

Those who know us know we are working diligently on getting ready for this season and the years beyond.  And wonderful thing happened last Thursday to speed us on our journey.  We were fortunate enough to win the coveted CBDC Tourism Business of the Year Award, awarded to us by Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador. Last year it was won by the Fogo Island Inn so you know we’re in good company. Holly McCue and my daughter Kathryn accepted the award on our behalf.  They report that it was a most lovely evening surrounded by the most lovely people – we here in the tourism industry...

Still A Favourite

Readers of this blog know that I love sharing scenic shots of the Wonderful World of Whiteway on Sundays – typically of sunsets and Shag Rock, both of which are easily viewed from our back deck (and the back deck of our cottages). You may also recognize this picture, which I’ve copped from our homepage. It’s still one of my all-time favourite shots of Shag Rock, with the majestic waves crashing and the sun just about to set. Seemed like just the thing to share this morning –...

Throwback Thursday: Clifford Fishes

Yowzas – this is one heck of a Throwback Thursday. We first shared this photo back in 2012. This of course is our friend, brilliant artist and consummate Newfoundlander, Clifford George. And I believe this shot of his over-the-top catch was caught by his daughter, Allison (a brilliant photographer in her own right).  This was taken, of course, during the recreational cod fishery … which we know many people are already looking forward to this...
